Background: Tamil Nadu or "the land of Tamil" is the southern-most state of India. Formerly Madras state, 50,180 sq mi (129,966 sq km), SE India, on the Bay of Bengal. The capital is Madras (Chennai). The State of Karnataka bounded by Maharashtra and Goa States in the North and North-West; by the Arabian sea in the West; by Kerala and Tamil Nadu States in the South and by the State of Andhra Pradesh in the East. It accounts for 5.83 percent of the total area of the country (32.88 lakh sq.km) and ranks eighth among major States of the country in terms of size.


People: The Tamil (total pop 614,000) are the dominant people group in the state of Tamil Nadu. The Tamil are mostly Muslim, with 2,000 or so Hindu. 0% are Christians.
